2013 Thelma A. Robinson Scholarship Award
The Conductors Guild announces Raúl Gómez as a nominee for the 2013 Thelma A. Robinson Scholarship Award. This distinguished award and $1,250 prize is given biennially to a U.S. citizen who has participated in at least one Conductors Guild Conductor Training Workshop. The award is sponsored by the National Federation of Music Clubs (NFMC), endowed by the Ohio Federation of Music Clubs, and named in honor of Thelma A. Robinson, NFMC Past President.
Following each Conductor Training Workshop, faculty members submit one nomination for the scholarship making it an incredible accomplishment to be nominated out of the pool of over 100 participants in the 2010-2012 seasons. The nominees this year include Matthew Brown, Yu-Chi Chou, Raúl Gómez, Lauren Heller, Norman Huynh, David Jacobs, Christopher Lees, Vinay Parameswaren, William Reed, Jamie Reeves, Rebecca Smithorn and Douglas Stone. The award will be presented at the 2013 Conductors Guild Annual Conference June 16th at The Union Station DoubleTree in St. Louis, MO.
Raúl Gómez was appointed Assistant Conductor of Louisiana Sinfonietta in Baton Rouge, LA and Sinfonietta Belo Horizonte in Brazil in 2012. He has appeared as guest conductor with Nicholls State University Orchestra, LSU Symphony Orchestra, Miami Chamber Orchestra, the Youth Orchestra of Panama, the Contemporary String Ensemble in New Orleans and the Premier Orchestral Institute in Madison, Mississippi. A champion of new music, Raúl has recently conducted three world premieres: Liduino Pitombeira’s Concerto for Piano 4 Hands, Ronaldo Cadeu’s ballet Crime and Punishment, and New Orleans jazz legend Wardell Quezergue’s posthumous premiere of his “Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ,” which was recorded for broadcast by WWOZ, New Orleans. As a 2011 Conducting Fellow at Aspen Music Festival, Raúl worked with Robert Spano, Hugh Wolff, Larry Rachleff and Murry Sidlin. Additionally, he has participated in master classes with David Effron, Carl Topilow, Theodore Kuchar, Diane Wittry, Mark Scatterday, Donald Hunsberger and Michael Votta. In June 2011, Raúl started work as Artistic Director of Kids’ Orchestra, a year round program designed to foster social change and nurture promising futures for youth in Baton Rouge. After a successful first year during which Raúl led a team of teachers that changed the lives of close to 100 students, he continues his involvement with the organization as Artistic Advisor. His work with Kids’ Orchestra made him the recipient of the Hildegard Behrens Foundation Young Artist Humanitarian Award in 2012. Raúl completed graduate degrees at Louisiana State University (D.M.A. in orchestral conducting and M.M. in violin performance), where he studied with Carlos Riazuelo, Kevork Mardirossian and Espen Lilleslatten. As a graduate student at LSU, he was a Sidney M. Blitzer violinist and a Huel D. Perkins Doctoral Fellow.
